This project is a variation of a coaster design. Wood is a good choice and provides a rustic look.
When engraving objects that the laser will not cut out, I find it is helpful to first draw a box or circle to give an idea of the workspace. For this project we will start out with a small square since it is going on a small wooden coaster.

I have created a Mother's Day design for this project to go on the coaster. I want to ensure that the design goes all the way to the edge, so I've oversized the engraving so that the laser runs off the sides.
Since this is a hardwood, I have slowed down my engraver to 60mm/s and have the laser at 100%.
