Meet the little cylinder that turns desk clutter into desk character, an airy, modern pencil holder with a satisfying grid look that lets your favourite pens breathe.
-Made from 3 mm basswood (also works great in 3 mm MDF), it assembles into a sturdy round organiser with a 100 mm diameter and 105 mm height, compact enough for any desk, roomy enough for all the “just-in-case” markers.
-Perfect for pens, pencils, brushes, fineliners, or that one ruler that always disappears. A simple, giftable build for makers, students, designers, and anyone whose stationery collection has… feelings.

Step 1 — Build the ring ladder
- Choose one of the column/vertical strip as your base.
- Slide all 6 rings onto that column, aligning each ring’s tabs with the matching slots so the rings sit straight and evenly spaced (like in the photos).
- Add a small amount of glue to each slot connection, just enough to lock it in, not so much that it squeezes out.
- Press and hold each joint for a few seconds, and double-check that every ring is fully seated and square before the glue grabs.
- Let this sub-assembly set for a few seconds before moving to the next step, so the rings don’t slip out of alignment.

Step 2 — Add the remaining columns
- Keep the ring “ladder” from Step 1 on a flat surface so the rings stay aligned.
- Take the next vertical column and line up its tabs with the matching slots on all 6 rings.
- Apply a small amount of glue to the slot joints, then press the column into place ring-by-ring until every tab is fully seated.
- Repeat with the remaining columns, attaching them one by one and checking after each column that the cylinder stays round and nothing is twisted.
- Do a final “connection check”: gently squeeze each joint and re-seat anything that’s not fully inserted before the glue sets.

Step 3 — Attach to the base
Apply a thin line of glue to the bottom tabs/edges of the cylinder, then place it onto the bottom panel and align everything so it sits flat and centered. Press gently all around, make sure every tab is fully seated, and wipe away any glue squeeze-out before it dries.

Step 4 — Insert the pins (no glue)
Slide the 8 pins into the pin slots around the rings, one by one, pressing them in smoothly from top to bottom. (like the uploaded video for this step)
No glue is needed here, the pins are designed to fit snugly and should drop in easily (don’t force them).
Note: the updated file has 8 pin slots; some photos may show 12 slots, which is from an older version and is not correct. (8 is correct number of pins)

Step 5 — Attach the top ring
Add a tiny drop of glue to the top of each pin and to the top tabs of the vertical columns. Carefully place the large top ring on the cylinder, lining up all slots, then press down gently until it sits flat and fully seated.
Gluing the pins into the top ring locks everything together, helping the whole holder stay firm and steady.
THANKS
Your pencil holder is ready.
Go introduce it to your pens… they’ve been freelancing on your desk for too long 😊
