This test grid allows you to test settings for water based stained or painted wood for a deep engrave, or a shallow pale engrave. The wood used in this test was 3mm basswood ply, but it would also work for similar pale softwoods.
Sand the wood with 120 then 180 grit
Stain or paint the wood
Add the wood to the laser bed and use the machine's built-in functions to either take a photo or add the material to the XCS software
Place the test grid over your material
Ensure your vent hose is outside
Hit start on XCS, then hit the button on the machine. Do not leave it alone as some of the engraves are deep and could cause issues.
Once complete, allow the smoke to clear from the machine, then remove your wood. Use an alcohol wipe to clear soot or debris. Do not sand, as it will remove your stain or paint colour.
Finished — tweak the settings and run again until you get the desired look.
