Handmade butcher block cutting board

Plane hardwood of your choice. Glue and clamp the pieces together in a staggered layout so no two ends are at the same point.
After the glue dries, cut the board to size and route the edges.
Sand the board until it's smooth. I prefer to go up to a 330 grit sand paper.
Engrave the design deeply into the wood. Do multiple passes to get to at least an 1/8" depth. Don't worry too much about overburn as you'll be sanding the top.
Fill the engraving with a 2 part epoxy and let it cure.
Sand the top until the epoxy is flush with the wood. A belt sander makes this much easier.
Apply a food safe protectant. I used walrus oil.
