There is usually a lot of soot leftover, I cleaned it up with just vinegar and a microfiber cloth. I don't recommend using paper towels because they tear. 

Then added some mineral oil on it spreading it generously with a sponge, or just your hands, then let the board soak up the mineral oil, preferably 24 hours.
