Information

I recently saw a clip of a joke box that used string to spin a surprise spider as the lid slid. I made it, but decided to use a gear instead for the make it move challenge and for Halloween. It was a fun trial and error project that I hope you enjoy making!

Place the side rails onto the sides, then assemble the box. Leave the final top piece and lid off for now. Sand about ½” of each dowel end just a little bit and then drill a hole in the center.

Feed the dowel through one side, slide gear on and then push through the other side. Secure with rings. Test that it spins.  Sand dowel ends more if needed.  I used a coat hanger, but any stiff/somewhat flexible material could be used (pipe cleaner or crafting wire) to hold the spider.  Remember the top lid has some depth, so the spider should not touch the side.

Step3: Glue strip on lid

Glue strip 7mm from the edge.  Add SLIDING LID and test. Once you are happy, snap final bracket over the lid and enjoy.  I used E6000 adhesive to hold the spider to the coat hanger.  It held with flexibility.
