The Dream Pencil: A Child’s Ambition, Engraved Into Every Word - Personalized depth-engraved pencils made with the xTool F2 and rotary attachment

Information
A pencil is often the first tool a child uses to shape their future.
It writes their first sentence, solves their first difficult problem, sketches their first invention, and records the dreams they are still learning how to describe.
But what happens when that pencil carries the dream itself?
The Story Behind the Dream Pencil
Children are constantly asked:
-> “What do you want to become when you grow up?”
They may say astronaut, musician, scientist, artist, engineer, doctor, writer—or something the world has not invented yet.
But as school becomes busy and lessons become difficult, those dreams can begin to feel far away. Children need small, positive reminders that their everyday effort matters.
That is why I created the Dream Pencil.
Each pencil is personalized with the child’s name and engraved with illustrations inspired by their interests, imagination, and ambitions. Instead of keeping their dream on a poster across the room, the child can hold it directly in their hand.
Every sentence they write becomes a small step toward it.
Every mistake they erase becomes permission to try again.
Every time they look at the engraving, the pencil quietly reminds them:
Your dream belongs in your hands. Keep writing your way toward it.
Instruction
Step1: Discover the child’s dream
The design begins with the child—not the machine.
I choose imagery connected to the child’s interests or ambitions. Space elements can represent curiosity and exploration. Musical symbols can celebrate creativity. Books, stars, artistic patterns, scientific icons, and imaginative doodles can each tell a different story.
The child’s name is added prominently near the eraser so that the pencil remains easy to identify.
Step2: Prepare a wraparound design

A pencil offers very little engraving space, so every line must have a purpose.
The artwork is simplified into engraving-friendly line art and arranged along the usable length of the pencil. The child’s name remains clear and readable, while the surrounding illustration flows around the pencil.
The engraving area is also positioned away from the sharpened end so that the design remains visible as the pencil is used.
Step3: Mount the pencil on the rotary attachment

The pencil is carefully aligned on the rotary tool so that it can rotate evenly during engraving.
Because pencils are narrow and may not be perfectly round, alignment is especially important. I perform a framing check before starting and make sure the artwork will not overlap the metal ferrule or eraser.
Step4: Create the depth engraving
The pencils are engraved using the xTool F2 with the rotary attachment.
Rather than creating only a light surface mark, I used controlled depth engraving to form a tactile design. The objective was to make the artwork clearly visible and touchable without weakening the pencil body.
Settings should always be tested on an extra pencil because paint, wood, coatings, and pencil construction can vary between manufacturers.
Step5: Inspect and clean
After engraving, I check that:
- The child’s name is readable.
- The pattern is evenly positioned.
- The pencil remains structurally sound.
- No sharp or uncomfortable edges were created.
- The engraving is deep enough to feel but comfortable enough for writing.
Any loose residue is removed before the pencil is handled or gifted.
