Skeleton wearing a top hat and holding a candle

Information
Create a fun Halloween tabletop display featuring a cheerful skeleton wearing a tall top hat and holding a candle. This playful design combines classic spooky elements with a lighthearted cartoon style, making it a great décor piece for shelves, desks, tiered trays, party tables, or Halloween displays.
The engraved details give the character extra personality while keeping the project simple to cut and assemble. It looks great in natural wood, but it can also be painted, stained, or customized in your own Halloween color palette. This project is a great choice for makers who enjoy easy laser-cut seasonal décor with a vintage spooky feel.
Instruction
Step1
Before You Begin
Cut and engrave all project pieces from your chosen material. Carefully remove the pieces from the laser bed and clean away any loose residue or soot.
Sort the pieces and compare them with the finished project image before beginning assembly.
If you plan to paint, stain, or decorate the project, it is usually easier to finish the individual pieces before gluing them together.
Slot and Tab Fit Notice
Test the slot-and-tab fit on your own machine and material before cutting the complete project. Laser machines, material thicknesses, kerf, settings, and cutting operations can vary.
The provided fit worked correctly during my testing, but you should always make a small test cut to confirm the fit. Adjust the slots or tabs if needed before cutting the full project.
Assembly
- Sort all pieces and determine their correct position.
- Test-fit the pieces before applying glue.
- Make sure all tabs fit into their matching slots without excessive force.
- Check the project from the front and sides to ensure all pieces are straight and properly aligned.
- Once you are satisfied with the fit, apply a small amount of wood glue to the connecting areas.
- Assemble the pieces and wipe away any excess glue before it dries.
- Hold or support the pieces as needed until the glue begins to set.
- Allow the glue to dry completely before moving, decorating, or displaying the finished project.
Helpful Tips
Use glue sparingly to prevent visible squeeze-out.
If a tab is too tight, lightly sand the edges instead of forcing it into the slot. If the fit is slightly loose, a small amount of wood glue can help secure it.
Handle narrow, pointed, or detailed areas carefully, as they may be more delicate than the larger parts of the project.
Paint markers, acrylic paint, stain, or other craft finishes can be used to customize the finished design. Always allow painted or stained pieces to dry completely before assembly.
