What makes these magnets special is the back: four 3 × 1 mm magnets sit flush in deep-engraved press-fit pockets, so no bulky backing layer is required.
A little German wordplay for every fridge door! This set contains eight cute dog- and cat-themed magnets made from 3 mm basswood plywood: “Miezverstanden,” “Katzastrophe!,” “Keksperte,” “Knochenjob,” “Hundum glücklich,” “Leinen los!,” “Schnurrlaub,” and “Pfotastisch!” They make a fun small gift for German-speaking pet owners, dog lovers, cat lovers, or anyone who enjoys silly puns.
The included xTool project contains the complete engraved and cut front layouts plus two rear templates for 3 × 1 mm disc magnets. I used four magnets per wooden piece, which provided more than enough holding force for my use. An eight-magnet version is included for users who want a different layout or more holding force. The circular pockets are deep-engraved so the magnets can be pressed into the wood and sit flush with the rear surface. The fit is designed as a press fit, so glue is not required in my tested pieces; however, a suitable adhesive is recommended for permanent retention and improved small-part safety. Magnet tolerances, plywood layers, glue lines, and laser calibration vary, so always test one pocket on scrap material before processing the finished piece.
This original project was physically made and tested on an xTool M1 Ultra with the 20 W laser module. The animal illustrations were generated with AI and then prepared, arranged, and adapted for laser engraving. The rounded typography uses Fredoka. All product and process images are real photographs of the completed project; no AI-generated or AI-edited product images were used (except the cover-image - Original also included). The reusable SVG motifs are also included. Fredoka is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; the font file itself is not redistributed with this project.
Safety: These magnets are small parts and this project is not a toy. Keep the finished pieces and loose magnets away from children and pets. A detached or swallowed magnet can cause severe injury; use adhesive for permanent retention, inspect the press fit regularly, and follow the magnet supplier’s safety instructions. Keep magnets away from sensitive electronics and medical devices where applicable. Do not rely on these wooden magnets to support valuable, heavy, hot, or fragile objects: anything held by a magnet can fall and break. Laser-process only known, laser-safe material with effective exhaust and continuous supervision. If paper or masking tape is placed below the reversed workpiece, secure it completely: Air Assist can lift loose material into the beam and start a fire. Use full Air Assist for the deep rear engraving because it produces a large amount of smoke, but stop immediately if the workpiece or any backing material moves, chars excessively, or ignites.
Instruction
Step1: Open the tested project and check the material
Open Witzige_Haustiermagneten_Deutsch.xs in xTool Studio. The file has been manufactured successfully without changes, but wood density, glue layers, flatness, and laser condition vary. Check every operation, focus, processing order, and layer assignment before starting. Run a small cut and deep-engraving test on scrap from the same sheet if anything differs from the tested setup.
Settings: Use the parameters saved in the project file after confirming them for your own material and machine.
Step2: Engrave and cut the front designs

Place the 3 mm basswood plywood flat in the machine, focus correctly, enable effective exhaust, and run Preview. Engrave all front details first and cut the outlines last. Step3: Remove and inspect the cut pieces
After the machine has finished and smoke has cleared through the exhaust, remove the sheet and all loose pieces from the laser. Confirm that every outline is fully cut and that no fragile detail has been damaged.
Step4: Turn one magnet over and center it
Place one finished wooden design face down in the empty laser bed so its undecorated rear faces upward. If desired, place paper or masking tape below it to reduce dirt from the honeycomb panel, but secure the backing completely so Air Assist cannot lift it. A loose sheet can enter the laser beam and ignite.

Step5: Select and align the rear pocket template

Open either the 4 Magneten or 8 Magneten canvas. I tested the four-pocket version and found four magnets per wooden piece fully sufficient for normal fridge use. Move the complete pocket group so it is centered safely within the wooden outline. Keep every pocket away from thin edges and fragile details.
Run Preview before every rear engraving. The preview must remain completely inside the wooden piece. Check the actual diameter of your magnets before processing: a small manufacturing tolerance can change a press fit noticeably.
Step6: Deep-engrave the magnet pockets
Deep-engrave the circular pockets using the settings already stored in the selected rear canvas. The tested pocket layer uses 100% power, 50 mm/s, 1 pass, and density 100 on the M1 Ultra 20 W. This produced a recess suitable for the tested 3 × 1 mm magnets in the tested 3 mm basswood plywood.
Use full Air Assist and effective exhaust because deep engraving creates considerably more smoke than a light surface engraving. Keep the process under continuous supervision. Stop immediately if the part or backing shifts, the recess approaches the front surface, or flame persists. Never assume that the same settings will create exactly 1 mm depth in a different plywood sheet; test first.
Step7: Inspect and clean the rear surface
Remove the wooden piece and confirm that all pockets are clean, flat, and deep enough for a flush fit without breaking through the front. Test one magnet before installing the rest. If necessary, remove smoke marks with fine sanding. Complete all sanding or laser cleaning before inserting magnets. Never place loose magnets into a laser machine.
Step8: Press in the magnets
Press each 3 × 1 mm magnet straight into its pocket. Hand pressure using another magnet or a flat protective block is usually sufficient. A padded pair of pliers or a plastic mallet can also be used carefully. Keep fingers out of pinch points and protect the engraved wood from dents, scratches, or cracking.
The tested pockets held the magnets by friction alone. For permanent use, apply a small amount of adhesive compatible with both wood and the magnet coating before pressing the magnets flush. Wipe away excess adhesive and allow it to cure fully according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Inspect the finished magnet before use and discard or repair any piece with a loose insert.
Step9: Final check and use
Place each finished piece on a clean steel surface and check that it sits flat. Test the holding force with a non-fragile item first. Four installed magnets were more than sufficient in my test, but holding force depends on the magnets, steel surface, air gap, and object being held. Do not use these pieces for heavy or valuable items, and keep them away from children and pets.
The complete set is now ready as a playful handmade gift for German-speaking dog and cat lovers.
