Information
This project requires wooden cubes, which are available to purchase online or at your local crafts store. The engraving file is for 1in x 1in cubes but can be scaled according to the cubed you have.
Why Chess Dice?
Chess Dice makes learning chess more approachable and less intimidating. Instead of analyzing every possible move, beginners focus on the legal moves for a single piece, making each turn easier to understand. This naturally teaches how every piece moves while reducing decision overload.
It's a fun way to:
-Learn how each chess piece moves.
-Build tactical thinking one move at a time.
-Create balanced games between experienced and new players.
-Add variety and excitement to traditional chess.
-Encourage family game nights and classroom learning.
Whether you're introducing a child to chess, teaching a friend, or looking for a fresh twist on a classic game, Chess Dice offers a simple, engaging way to enjoy the world's most popular strategy game.
How to Play Chess Dice
Chess Dice is played using a standard chessboard and pieces. Before each turn, roll the die to determine which type of piece you must move. If you have a legal move with that piece, you must make it. If no legal move exists, roll again (or pass your turn if using that variation). The game follows all standard chess rules, including check, checkmate, castling, en passant, and pawn promotion.
The randomness of the die creates new challenges, encouraging players to think creatively while still practicing core chess strategy.

Engraving Instructions
This jig is designed to engrave all six faces of a set of six wooden dice while ensuring that each die receives one of each chess piece (King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn) without duplicates.
- Secure the jig to the laser bed and set your engraving origin.
- Place the six blank dice into the jig with one blank face facing upward.
- Engrave the first set of chess piece symbols.
- After engraving, carefully remove all six dice, without changing their position.
- Rotate every die so that a new blank face is facing upward.
- Shift the dice one position forward, moving the last die to the first position (a circular rotation).
- Position 1 ← Previous Position 6
- Position 2 ← Previous Position 1
- Position 3 ← Previous Position 2
- Position 4 ← Previous Position 3
- Position 5 ← Previous Position 4
- Position 6 ← Previous Position 5
- Place the dice back into the jig and engrave the next face.
- Repeat Steps 4–7 until all six faces have been engraved.
Why the Rotation Works
Each engraving position corresponds to a different chess piece. By rotating every die to a new blank face and shifting the dice one position after each engraving, every die visits each engraving position exactly once. At the end of six engraving cycles, every die contains one King, one Queen, one Rook, one Bishop, one Knight, and one Pawn—one symbol on each face, with no duplicates.
