Information

Create a beautiful 17.5in x 9in x 0.5in layered American flag tabletop display using four layers of 3 mm basswood plywood. This project combines precision laser cutting with wood staining to produce a dimensional piece that showcases contrasting wood tones and clean, crisp details. The finished flag can be displayed on a tabletop using an easel, picture frame stand, or shelf.

Finished Features:

Four-layer construction for added thickness and durability
Layered stars and stripes for a dimensional appearance
Three-tone stained wood finish
Freestanding tabletop décor
Great for patriotic décor, gifts, offices, and home displays

Instruction

1

Step1: Prepare the Pieces

After all pieces have been laser cut, lightly sand every piece to remove any burn marks or char from the edges. This will ensure clean glue joints and a smooth, professional finish.

Remove any dust before staining.

2

Step2: Apply the Stain

Use two to three stain colors to create contrast throughout the flag.

  • Dark stain: Apply to the canton (the section containing the stars).
  • Medium stain: Apply to the stripe pieces that represent the red stripes.
  • Light stain or natural wood: Leave the scored backing layer natural or apply a very light stain to represent the white stripes.

Allow all stain to dry completely before assembly.

3

Step3: Assemble the Flag

There are four total layers.

Layer 1

The decorative top layer containing:

  • Star panel
  • Individual stripe pieces

Layer 2

The scored alignment layer.

This layer contains engraved placement guides that make positioning the stars and stripes quick and accurate.

Apply a thin, even layer of wood glue to the engraved guide areas and place each decorative piece into its matching location.

Layer 3

Blank backing layer.

Glue this layer to the back of the scored layer to add strength and rigidity.

Layer 4

Second blank backing layer.

Glue this final layer to the back to create a sturdy finished piece with extra thickness.

4

Step4: Clamp and Dry

Once all layers have been assembled:

  • Clamp the project or place a flat, heavy object on top.
  • Allow the glue to dry completely according to the glue manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Ensure every layer remains flat while drying to prevent lifting or warping.
5

Step5: Final Sanding

After the glue has fully cured, lightly sand the front and edges once more to remove any excess dried glue and give the project a clean, finished appearance.

Take care not to sand through the stain.

6

Step6: Display

Your finished American Flag Tabletop Art is ready to display!

It can be showcased using:

  • A tabletop easel
  • A decorative picture frame holder
  • A shelf or mantel display
  • A desk or office stand

Its layered construction creates beautiful depth while maintaining a slim profile, making it a striking piece of patriotic décor for homes, offices, or gifts!
