Information

This project is much more than a wooden seed box.

It represents the beginning of a journey—both for me as a maker and for the children who will use it.

I only recently began creating with the xTool M2, and this is the first design I've made that truly feels like my own. What started as curiosity quickly became something much more meaningful because I discovered this hobby alongside my son, who has ASD. Spending time designing, testing ideas, and creating together has given us a shared interest where we can both learn, focus, and celebrate every small success.

That experience inspired me to create something that could help other children discover the same excitement of learning through making.

The Seed Box is designed for schools as a simple way to organise and store seeds for gardening projects and outdoor learning. Every compartment holds the promise of something new—a flower, a vegetable, a lesson in patience, or a child's first experience of growing something with their own hands.

I believe that encouraging children to plant seeds is about much more than gardening. It teaches responsibility, curiosity, sustainability, and respect for nature. A single seed can become a science lesson, a classroom project, or simply a reason for a child to spend more time outdoors.

For me, this project also represents growth. It's my first proper design since starting my laser crafting journey with the xTool M2. Like every maker, I started with what I could afford. Unfortunately, when we purchased our machines, adding the print head simply wasn't within our budget, so we've focused on learning, designing, and making the very best we can with the tools we have.

One of the things I love most about the maker community is seeing how different people approach the same idea. I'd love to see what others could create with this design using the print head—adding colour, artwork, educational graphics, or custom school branding to make every Seed Box unique. It's exciting to think how one simple idea can grow into so many different creations.

Just as every plant begins with a seed, every maker starts with a first project. My hope is that this simple Seed Box helps schools inspire the next generation of makers, gardeners, and problem-solvers, while also encouraging families to spend more time creating together, just as my son and I have.

Sometimes the smallest ideas—and the smallest seeds—grow into something far bigger than we ever imagined.

Seed Box Assembly Guide

Start by assembling the main box.

Choose your end panels.
I designed three different end styles, so you can mix and match them however you like to create your own unique look.

Select a front panel.
There are two different front panel designs included—choose the one you prefer.

Resizing the box.
If you want to make the box larger or smaller, simply adjust the height of the design. Scaling the height will automatically resize the sides and base while keeping all of the finger joints aligned, so everything continues to fit together correctly.

5. Fit the frame pieces.

Next, assemble the four frame pieces around the outside of the box. These cover the finger-joint slots for a cleaner finish while also providing extra surface area for glue, making the joints stronger and more durable once assembled.

6. Add the month divider cards.

Now for my favourite part—create the month seed divider cards!

There are 12 dividers in total, one for each month of the year, making it easy to organise your seeds by planting season. To save material, you can fit four dividers onto a single sheet of basswood plywood before cutting.
