Round Brass Duck Medallion – IR Laser Engraving & UV Printed Background

Information
This project creates a premium 3 mm brass medallion featuring a confident duck character with a cigar. The outlines are engraved using the IR laser on the xTool F2 Ultra, while the recessed background is finished with UV printing to create a high-contrast, professional appearance. The polished brass character stands out against the dark background, making it suitable for keychains, pendants, challenge coins, badges, or collectible medals.
Instruction
Step1: Prepare the Material
Use a 3 mm polished brass plate. Remove dust, fingerprints, and oil with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free microfiber cloth. A clean surface improves engraving consistency and UV ink adhesion.
Step2: Import the Design

Open the project in xTool Creative Space and verify that all artwork is positioned correctly. Ensure the medal outline, character, and engraving regions are scaled as intended before starting.
Step3: Secure the Brass
Place the brass plate flat on the F2 Ultra worktable and secure it to prevent movement during engraving. Any movement can affect alignment, especially if UV printing will be applied afterward.
Step4: Focus and Frame

Run Auto Focus, then use Frame to confirm the engraving area matches the brass blank. Adjust the artwork position if necessary.
Step5: Perform a Material Test
Before engraving the final piece, run a small material test on an offcut or an unused corner of the brass. Brass composition and surface finish vary between manufacturers, so use the test to confirm the desired engraving depth and appearance.
Step6: Engrave the Artwork

Select the IR laser module and engrave the character and border using the parameters included in the project. Monitor the first few passes to ensure the engraving is clean and consistent.
Step7: Clean the Surface
After engraving, remove any residue using isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth. Ensure the engraved surface is completely clean and dry before applying UV ink.
Step8: UV Print the Background

Apply UV printing only to the background areas. Leave the engraved character, outer rim, and decorative border unprinted so the natural brass finish remains visible and provides strong contrast.
Step9: Cure and Inspect
Allow the UV ink to cure completely according to your printer's process. Inspect the medal for complete ink coverage, clean engraving lines, and proper registration between the engraving and printed background.
