Reading Lights the Way to Endless Adventures

Books have always been a source of comfort, imagination, and discovery, so I wanted to turn the idea of a book itself into a functional light. This lamp combines three simple materials—birch plywood, paper, and LEDs—to create something both practical and meaningful.

The covers are laser cut from 3 mm birch and engraved with a quote that celebrates the joy of reading. Inside, accordion-folded craft paper mimics the pages of a real book and softly diffuses the light from an LED strip hidden in the spine. When opened and stood upright, the lamp transforms into a warm ambient light that looks like the pages themselves are glowing.

This project is designed to be both décor and conversation piece—a cozy reading light for a bookshelf, bedroom, or classroom that reminds us that every adventure begins by opening a book. It takes ordinary materials and gives them a second purpose, turning wood, paper, and light into something that encourages curiosity, imagination, and a love of reading. 📚✨

Instruction

1

Step1: Cut and engrave the book cover

2

Step2: Attach the LED strip

Place the LED strip along the solid center strip inside the spine. Use the adhesive backing on the LED strip, double-sided tape, or small dots of hot glue to hold it in place. Make sure the LEDs face toward the paper pages so the light spreads through the book.

3

Step3: Cut and fold the paper for the pages

Cut strips or sheets of thin craft paper to fit between the covers. The paper should be slightly smaller than the wood covers so it does not stick out past the edges. Accordion-fold the paper evenly to create the look of book pages. Keep the folds consistent so the lamp opens smoothly and the pages fan out evenly.

4

Step4: Attach the paper to the cover

Glue one end of the folded paper stack to the inside of the front cover and the other end to the inside of the back cover. Use a thin layer of glue so the paper does not wrinkle too much.

5

Step5: Enjoy!

Plug in your LEDs, turn off all the lights, and look in awe at what you have made!!
