The story behind this image

For my birthday, I wanted to give something that is more than just a beautiful picture. Something personal. Something that brings joy every day and reminds us of what really matters in life.

When I thought of this family, an image immediately came to mind: three hearts in three different places. Each place tells its own story, each heart represents a home full of memories, love and shared moments.

Over the years, children go their own ways. They move to other cities or even other countries, start families and create their own homes. The distances on the map are getting bigger, but the connection remains. Because the most important paths do not run over roads or borders - they lead from heart to heart.

That's exactly what this picture is supposed to show. The three hearts connect the places where this family lives today. They remind us that closeness does not depend on kilometers. That love, cohesion and family are stronger than any distance.

I hope that this gift will always put a smile on your face. Maybe when passing by in everyday life, maybe in a quiet moment. And that it reminds you of the value of having people you love, no matter where in the world they are at home.

Create Card Hearts with xTool Studio

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to use the Map application in xTool Studio to prepare several heart-shaped place maps. In the end, you will receive files to engrave and cut out, which you can then place appropriately on your work surface.

Step1: Open Maps application in xTool Studio

First open xTool Studio and go to:

Applications → Cards

Select the Card application there. Then search for the desired location or map section that you want to use later in your heart.

Once you've found the right location, select the setting you want. In my example, I'm using a heart shape.

Step2: Creating a map layer

To get separate files for engraving and cutting later, you work with different colors or layers.

Place the required roads and map areas on your own levels. This will help you later distinguish which elements are to be engraved and which are to be cut out.

For this project, you'll mainly need:<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;>· Roads and small paths for engraving<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· Main roads or selected lines for the cut<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· the outer heart frame

Make sure that you name the layers cleanly or distinguish them by color so that you can easily recognize them later.

Once I have found the desired location, I select the frame, in this example the heart.

For each area, I create a separate file or layer. Then I assign the required streets and map elements to the respective files.

For orientation, you can see here which elements I have assigned to the individual layers:

Step3: Export created maps as svg

When all layers are prepared, export the file as SVG.

Important:
When you export, you get a separate SVG file for each layer you create. These individual SVG files are then further processed in xTool Studio.

Step4: Import editing and creation in xTool Studio / svg

First, import the SVG file that will be engraved later.

Since the outer frame (square) is not needed in this file, remove it:

import 1st SVG file<

4. If necessary, click Ungroup a second time<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">6. Delete frame

Then export this prepared road map as a PNG.
This PNG file will later be used for engraving.

Step5: Overview of the files you need

For the finished project you need several prepared elements:<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· the road map as PNG for the engraving<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· the upper road map or main roads as a cut file<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· the outer heart frame<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· a clipping mask for the overlap of the hearts<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· possibly further place cards for the small hearts

I first prepare the road map, which will only be engraved. We will also need this later for the clipping mask.

Import the svg of the layer above. In my example, this is black.

Remove the outer square frame first:<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">import 1st layer<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">2nd click Ungroup twice

3rd delete outer frame

4. remove all inner parts of the heart, these are not needed for the time being

In this step, only the outer heart frame remains.

Next, import the SVG file of the gray street map.

Remove the outer square frame as described above. Then erase everything until only the outer heart frame remains.

Now determine the desired size of your hearts. It's best to make a note of the measurements so that you can reuse them later for other hearts.

In my example, I used the following sizes:<

p style="margin-left:36.0pt;">· middle heart: width 250 mm

· smaller heart: width 220 mm

Copy these two hearts and paste them into a new project page.

Mark both hearts.

Then go to:

Merge →Subtract<o:p>

This will remove the overlap of the large heart from the smaller heart.

The resulting shape is your clipping mask for the next step.

Step7: to cut the road map to be engraved

Preview

Now import the PNG of the road map to be engraved.

Tip: open a new project page, copy the clipping mask from step 6 and paste it on the page.

Adjust the size of the road map to your clipping mask, then place the clipping mask on top of the road map.

Select both elements and choose:

intersection

Now the road map is cropped to the shape of the clipping mask. After that, your engraved road map should be appropriately displayed in the shape of a heart.

Then place the previously copied clipping mask back on the road map so that you can use it for further construction.
