Information

I needed something to dress up my new classroom. After seeing how much a custom neon sign would cost, I designed this much cheaper alternative. This is my first attempt at using EL wire. I used 2.3 mm wire, but I think it would have looked better with 5mm wire, although I am not sure that it would fit as well.

This is my first multi-step project so I'm just happy that I spelled everything correctly and it turned out like I envisioned!

Step1: Assembly

Cut out the pieces.  Paint them as desired.  Glue all 3 layers together.  Run the EL wire starting at the bottom.  I started with the “e” in science and worked left, up and then right.  I ended with the “r” and then looped it behind the back to cross the “t”.  This left about 2 inches of EL wire left over.  I did not need to use any glue to keep the wire in place because I pressed the wire firmly in each corner and pulled the wire snuggly around each letter.  I did use some tape on the back to keep the wire in place.  I've used command velcro strips to adhere to the wall.  The strips are thick enough to not interfere with the wiring.
