Information

We're constantly connected online, yet so many still feel lonely in the real world.

I wanted to change that and spread some unexpected joy using something we all have lying around our workshops: scrap wood.
I designed this little lady to be the ultimate scrap-buster for those odd pieces of leftover 3 mm plywood. I leave her in everyday spots in my community—like park benches or electrical boxes—with different uplifting messages engraved on the back.
My hope is simple: that a stranger having a heavy day spots her, turns her around, and finds exactly the words they needed to smile. Sometimes, a tiny act of kindness is all it takes to make someone feel seen.
Join the movement:
This is a super quick cut and the perfect way to clear out your scrap bin while making a real difference in your local community. Download the file, cut a few ladies, engrave your own positive messages, and hide them around your city. Let's spread some guerrilla kindness together!

Step1

How to Make Your Double-Sided Design in XCS

Welcome to the build! To get those perfect double-sided characters for your 3mm (1/8") plywood stand, we’re going to use a classic laser maker trick: "The Flip."

Follow these steps in xTool Creative Space (XCS) to get perfectly aligned front and back engravings.

Step 1: Open & Import

Launch xTool Creative Space and make sure your laser is connected.

 Start a “New Project”.

Click “Import” (or File → Import) and bring your file onto the canvas.

characters.

Once finished, pop them out, assemble them into the stand, and you're all done!

Step 2: Understand the Layout

When you open the file, you will see a few different parts:

The Front (Green): The front characters.

The Back (Blue): The text for the back.

The Anchor Lines (Red): These are visual guides only!

The Stand Elements: The base and legs for your characters.

Step 3: Lock Your Anchor Lines

To make sure everything lines up perfectly later, we need to lock the red anchor lines in place.

 Select the red outlines.

Right-click and select Lock / Unlock (or press Option+Cmd+L / Alt+Ctrl+L). Now they won't move by accident!

Step 4: Prepare the First Run (The Front)

We only want to process the front of the characters and the stand components first.

Select the Red anchor lines and the Blue text.

Go to the right-hand menu and turn the Output toggle OFF.

Now, drag your Front Design (Green) and place it perfectly over the locked red anchor lines.

Step5

Step 5: Cut and Engrave

Set your engrave and cut settings for 3mm (1/8") plywood.

Click Process, then Start, and let the laser do its magic!

6

Step6

Step 6: The "Maker Magic" Flip

CRITICAL: When the laser finishes, do not move your sheet of plywood! Leave the "skeleton" (the outer wood) exactly where it is.

Carefully remove the character cutouts (the "aunts").

Flip them over horizontally (mirror them) and place them upside down right back into the holes they just came out of. The wood skeleton acts as your perfect alignment jig.

Step 7: Prepare the Second Run (The Back)

Back in XCS, it’s time to set up the back layer:

Turn the Output toggle OFF for the Front Design (Green) and the stand components.

Grab your Back Design (Blue text) and drag it over perfectly onto your locked red anchor lines.
