Information

A simple geometric mandala can transform an ordinary aluminum dog tag into a striking jewelry piece.
In this project we create a clean mandala engraving on brushed aluminum using the IR laser module of the xTool F2.

The technique uses vector tracing, tone layering, and multi-pass engraving to produce subtle contrast on the metal surface. Aluminum engraving typically produces tones ranging from light silver to dark gray/black depending on laser energy, so controlling layers carefully is essential for a crisp result.

This method works great for:

• Dog tags
• Jewelry pendants
• Keychains
• Decorative metal tags

The result is a minimal yet luxurious pendant with sharp mandala symmetry and elegant contrast.

Instruction

1

Step1: Clean the Aluminum Surface

Before engraving, thoroughly clean the pendant.

  • Apply isopropyl alcohol to a lint-free cloth.
  • Wipe the aluminum surface carefully.
  • Remove all dust, fingerprints, or oil.

This step is extremely important because contaminants can cause uneven engraving tones on aluminum.
Allow the surface to dry completely before placing it in the laser.

Tip
Avoid touching the front surface after cleaning.

2

Step2: Import the Mandala Design

Open xTool Creative Space (XCS) and import your mandala artwork.

Supported formats:
• SVG
• PNG
• JPG

If using a raster image:

  • Use the Trace / Image Vectorization tool.
  • Convert the design into vector paths.
  • Ungroup the vectors.
  • Remove unnecessary tiny fragments.

Cleaning the vectors ensures the engraving runs smoothly and prevents unexpected laser passes.

3

Step3: Add Dark Score Highlight (Optional)

To emphasize key lines:

  • Duplicate the outline of the mandala.
  • Assign it to a Dark Score layer.
  • Use higher power but faster speed.
  • This creates sharp contour lines that act like ink strokes in an illustration, improving visual clarity.

Common highlight areas:

• Mandala center circle
• Outer frame
• Major geometric edges

4

Step4: Position the Pendant

Place the aluminum pendant inside the laser machine.

Tips for alignment:

• Use a jig if engraving multiple pieces
• Ensure the pendant is completely flat
• Focus the laser properly

Accurate positioning prevents distortion of the design.

5

Step5: Run the Engraving Passes

Run the engraving either by directly using the file or use tone mapping.

6

Step6: Final Cleaning

Once engraving is complete:

  • Wipe the surface gently with alcohol.
  • Remove engraving residue or soot.
  • Let the pendant dry.

This step reveals the final contrast and detail of the engraving.
