      This project demonstrates how to create a multi-tone engraved aluminum pendant using a simple layered SVG design and a laser color swatch technique. The scene features mountains, ocean waves, clouds, moon, stars, and a palm tree — all engraved with different laser settings to achieve multiple tones on anodized aluminum.

The design is assembled using vector SVG elements, and each element is assigned a color corresponding to a specific engraving power based on the aluminum color swatch reference. The laser then engraves the design layer by layer, producing a clean multi-tone landscape effect.

Some elements such as the snow caps on the mountains require multiple passes to achieve a brighter contrast, while most other elements are engraved in a single pass.

This technique works great for pendants, dog tags, keychains, and small metal artwork.

After engraving, the surface is cleaned using isopropyl alcohol to remove residue and reveal the final tones.

Materials:

- Aluminum pendant / dog tag
- Laser engraver (IR laser recommended for anodized aluminum)
- XCS or similar laser software

Step1: Create the Vector Scene

Start by designing the landscape scene using SVG vector elements.

The design includes:

  • Mountains
  • Snow caps
  • Palm tree
  • Ocean waves
  • Horizon lines
  • Clouds
  • Moon and stars

Each element should be created as separate vector objects so that they can be engraved with different settings.

Keep the design simple and bold since the engraving area on a pendant is small.

Step2: Assign Colors Using the Swatch Reference

Once the SVG design is imported into the laser software:

  1. Select each object in the design.
  2. Assign a color layer to it.
  3. Match each color to a power setting from the aluminum swatch reference(https://www.atomm.com/project/99333-aluminum-pendent-ir-swatch)

This allows different elements of the design to engrave with different tones, creating contrast between the sky, mountains, waves, and foreground elements.

Examples:

  • Dark tones → mountain silhouettes
  • Medium tones → waves and horizon lines
  • Light tones → clouds and sky elements

Step3: Position the Design on the Pendant

Place the pendant on the laser bed and focus the laser properly.

Then:

  • Align the SVG design to the pendant area
  • Use the framing feature to ensure the engraving fits perfectly inside the pendant boundaries

Proper alignment ensures the design sits centered on the pendant.

Step4: Engrave the Design Layer by Layer

Now engrave the design one layer at a time.

The laser will process each color layer separately based on its assigned power settings.

Most layers can be engraved in a single pass, but some areas require additional passes.

For example:

  • The snow caps on the mountains were engraved with 2–3 passes to achieve a brighter and more visible highlight.

Working layer by layer allows better control of the tones and prevents unwanted overlaps.

Step5: Clean the Surface

Once engraving is complete:

  1. Wipe the pendant using isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Use a soft cloth or brush to remove engraving residue.

Cleaning reveals the final tones clearly and gives the pendant a polished appearance.
