Information

One great way to adorn your wedding cake is with your family name. In this project, I will walk you through creating a cake topper. We will create a design that is self-supporting and does not require a backing board.

Instruction

1

Step1: Choose the font

The first step is to select a font.  I think a script font is the best choice, since there are many opportunities to make connections between characters.

2

Step2: Export and Import

Once you have the text typed in for the topper, it is helpful to export the text as an SVG then re-import it to the canvas.  This will make each letter an individual vector.  This will then give you the freedom to position the letters in any way you like.

3

Step3: Unite

Now we need to unite the vectors where they overlap.  This is an easy process.  Just select two letters and us the combine tool to unite the two.  You will need to do this one letter at a time, adding to the growing vector.

Step4: Add supports

next, we need to add in supports where there are point that two letters almost connect, but do not.  To solve this problem, I simply draw a rectangle or circle over the section and use the combine tool to unite the two vectors.

Step5: Add a stem

Next, add in a rectangle to server as the stem for the topper.  Don't forget to use the combine tool to unite this part to the rest of the topper.

Step6: Settings

All operations on this project are cut operations. The settings are for the D1 5W laser.  You may need to adjust the settings for your laser configuration.

Be sure to follow all the safety guidelines for your laser and always wear personal protective equipment when the laser is in operation.
