Information

      I created this stag slate design to capture a strong, natural scene that instantly stands out when engraved. The stag is a powerful and recognisable subject, and I wanted something that felt premium, decorative, and suitable for a wide range of uses — from home décor to personalised gifts.

The focus of the design is on contrast and clarity. The antlers and overall silhouette give the image structure, while the background is balanced to add depth without overpowering the main subject. When engraved onto slate, this creates a clean, high-contrast result where the stag remains the focal point and the detail still comes through.

I chose this style because it translates well into laser engraving and produces a consistent finish across different machines and settings. The goal was to create a design that not only looks good on screen, but also engraves reliably, making it easy for others to achieve a strong final result.

This project is designed to be simple to use while still delivering a detailed, professional-looking outcome.

Step1: Image Preparation

The source image was converted to grayscale and rebalanced to suit slate engraving. Midtones were reduced and contrast increased to separate the subject from the background. Fine detail in the background was softened slightly to prevent over-dithering, while key features (antlers and silhouette) were preserved for definition.

Step2: Inversion

The image was inverted. On slate, engraved areas appear lighter, so inversion ensures highlights are produced through engraving while shadows remain as the natural dark surface.

Step3: Final Engraving

The full design was engraved in a single pass, ensuring consistent motion and stable material positioning. No additional passes were applied to avoid loss of detail.

Step4: Post Processing

After engraving, the slate surface was cleaned to remove residue and enhance contrast. This step significantly improves the perceived brightness of the engraved areas and final clarity of the design.
