get rid of moisture out of slate before engraving

If you wash the slate with water be sure to get all moisture out of slate before applying gloss coat and engraving. If you don't the slate will develop little moisture pockets and be visible on finished product. one way of getting moisture out of slate is to put in oven at 200 degrees for around 20min.
