Information

I developed this technique for engraving and cutting real leather patches for knit hats and caps. I also cut the holes for the hand stitched thread in the patch (since I don’t have a leather sewing machine). I saw several projects that use leatherette patches that glue or iron on, but none using actual cowhide leather - so I decided to upload my design.. I use leather scraps purchased from Amazon. The patches are sewn on by hand (no glue or adhesive), there are a couple of approaches you can take depending on preference. I’ve included a couple different patch sizes and patterns (some I’ve done for myself, kids, & friends); you can customize with your own graphics or text.. Feel free to message with any questions..

Some points that help me:

  • Leather needs to be flat. I use masking tape to hold edges and help avoid the laser guard catching the leather (if the edge curls up). You can also wet down leather with a damp cloth, this will help folds in the leather come out.
  • I process in following order: engrave (green), cut thread holes (blue), and cut outer profile (red) last.
  • I use a little air assist.. I find too much air causes the leather to burn more and char a lot..
  • I apply beeswax leather protector or silicone leather protector after laser processing to help waterproof and protect the leather.
