How do you get the playing pieces to fit properly?

Account for kerf. The beam removes material, so a pocket cut to exactly 30 mm ends up slightly larger and a 30 mm token slightly smaller, leaving a loose fit. Cut one test pocket and one test token, measure the gap, then adjust the drawing by that amount. Around 0.2 mm of clearance feels right for pieces lifted in and out.

How do you make a travel version with magnets?

Accepted Answer

Recess a small neodymium magnet into the back of each token and use a steel sheet under the board, or reverse it with magnets in the board and steel washers in the tokens. Six millimetre diameter magnets are usually enough for light wooden pieces. Cut the magnet pocket a fraction undersize and press fit, since glue alone works loose with handling.

What thickness works best for a game board?

Six millimetre for the board gives enough depth to cut recessed grid pockets without going through, and enough mass that the board does not slide around in play. Tokens work well at three millimetre, which is thick enough to pick up easily and thin enough that a stack of ten still fits inside a shallow storage drawer.

How do you keep the pieces from getting lost?

Build storage into the board. A shallow drawer running under the playing surface is the neatest answer, and a sliding lid over a recessed compartment is simpler to cut. For travel sets, a small drawstring bag glued to the underside works, though a captive drawer is what stops pieces vanishing between the car seats.

Accepted Answer

Tic tac toe suits about four years and up, once a child can recognise a line of three. The limiting factor is the pieces: tokens under about 30 mm across are a choking risk for under-threes, and magnets are a serious hazard if swallowed. For toddlers, use large tokens and skip the magnetic version entirely.
