Information

In a world filled with screens and disposable products, I wanted to create something that quietly brings warmth and personality back into our homes.

The Midnight Companion Clock is a handcrafted wall clock inspired by the comforting presence of a beloved cat. For many people, pets are family members, offering companionship, routine, and a sense of calm. This piece captures that feeling in a functional object that can become part of someone's daily life.

Each clock is carefully designed and laser-crafted from wood, featuring a playful mid-century-inspired cat silhouette, delicate whiskers, and a celestial star motif that symbolizes guidance and comfort. Rather than creating an object that simply hangs on a wall, I wanted to make a piece that sparks joy every time someone checks the time.

This project is about bringing people closer to the memories and emotions that make a house feel like home. It can remind someone of a childhood pet, celebrate a current feline companion, or simply add warmth and character to a shared living space. Because it is both art and a practical household item, it becomes part of everyday routines and conversations, connecting family members and guests through a simple moment of delight.

The Midnight Companion Clock demonstrates that meaningful making doesn't always require complex technology or grand scale. Sometimes, a small object that brings comfort, creates memories, and encourages connection can have a lasting impact.

Make It Matter: By transforming a functional clock into a piece that celebrates companionship and the emotional bonds we have with our pets, this project turns an everyday object into something personal, joyful, and deeply human.

Instruction

1

Step1: Cut and engrave the pieces

Load the SVG into your laser software. Make sure the colors are assigned correctly: black for cutting, purple for line engraving, and green for fill engraving.

2

Step2: Organize the layers

After cutting, lay out all pieces before painting. This clock uses multiple stacked layers, so keep the face, eyes, body, clock face, star details, and tail pieces separated.

3

Step3: Dry-fit before painting

Stack the pieces together without glue first. This helps you see which parts of each layer will remain visible once assembled, so you can paint only the areas that need that color.

4

Step4: Paint the base layers

Paint the main body and head black. Paint the eye pieces and clock face cream or white. Paint the nose and mouth detail orange or pink. Paint the star accents gold.

5

Step5: Paint visible hidden areas

Some lower layers may show through small openings or engraved/cut details. Use your dry-fit as a guide so those visible areas are painted the correct color before assembly.

6

Step6: Assemble the cat body

Glue the body layers together, lining up the outer edges and clock movement hole. Use light pressure while drying so the layers stay flat.

7

Step7: Attach the face details

Glue the eye pieces, pupils, nose, mouth, and any other facial details in place. Add the whiskers using thin wire, small dowels, or the included cut pieces if your file has them

8

Step8: Add the decorative details

Attach or highlight the gold star pieces on the body. Make sure any engraved details remain visible and clean.

9

Step9: Install the clock movement

Insert the clock mechanism from the back through the center hole. Secure it with the included washer and nut, then attach the clock hands.

10

Step10: Attach the tail

Add the tail piece at the bottom. If your design uses a moving pendulum tail, attach it according to your clock movement’s pendulum instructions. If it is decorative, glue it in place.

11

Step11: Final check

Make sure the hands move freely and do not rub against the clock face or each other. Add a battery, set the time, and hang the clock.
