Step1: Step-by-step Build Guide

Dungeons & Dragons Whisky Barrel Clock

Transform reclaimed whisky barrel oak into a unique fantasy-inspired wall clock featuring detailed laser engraving, custom dragon clock hands, and optional coloured epoxy accents.

Step 1: Prepare the Whisky Barrel Stave

Materials & Tools

  • Reclaimed whisky barrel stave
  • Orbital sander
  • 80, 120, 180, and 240 grit sandpaper
  • Wood cleaner or tack cloth

Process

  1. Select a stave with attractive grain and character marks.
  2. Remove dirt, loose fibres, and any metal residue.
  3. Sand progressively from 80 grit to 240 grit while preserving the barrel's natural curvature.
  4. Clean the surface thoroughly with a tack cloth.
  5. Mark the centre point for the clock mechanism.

Tip: Retaining some barrel marks and aging features adds authenticity and character.

Step 2: Laser Engrave the Design & Cut Clock Hands

Materials & Tools

  • CO₂ laser engraver
  • Prepared artwork files
  • 3mm plywood, MDF, acrylic, or veneer for hands

Process

  1. Position the stave securely in the laser bed.
  2. Engrave the Dungeons & Dragons artwork, Roman numerals, and decorative elements.
  3. Adjust engraving depth to achieve strong contrast without excessive charring.
  4. Cut the custom dragon-shaped clock hands from thin material.
  5. Sand and paint or stain the hands as desired.

Tip: Test engraving settings on scrap oak before engraving the final piece.

Step 3: Route the Back for the Clock Mechanism

Materials & Tools

  • Router or Forstner bit
  • Drill press or hand drill
  • Clock mechanism

Process

  1. Drill the centre shaft hole through the stave.
  2. Measure the depth of the clock movement body.
  3. Route a recessed pocket on the rear side to allow the mechanism to sit flush.
  4. Test fit the movement before final assembly.
  5. Ensure the shaft protrudes sufficiently through the front face.

Tip: A flush-mounted mechanism makes hanging easier and gives a professional finish.

Step 4: Assemble the Clock

Materials & Tools

  • Quartz clock movement
  • Clock hands
  • Battery
  • Hanging hardware

Process

  1. Insert the clock mechanism from the rear.
  2. Secure using the supplied washer and nut.
  3. Install the hour hand, minute hand, and second hand.
  4. Check that the hands move freely without touching each other.
  5. Fit hanging hardware to the rear.

Tip: Set all hands to 12 o'clock before installing to ensure accurate alignment.

Step 5: Optional Epoxy Colour Fill & Danish Oil Finish

Materials & Tools

  • Coloured epoxy resin or pigment
  • Mixing cups
  • Sandpaper (320–400 grit)
  • Danish Oil
  • Lint-free cloth

Process

  1. Fill selected engraved areas with coloured epoxy resin.
  2. Allow the resin to cure fully according to manufacturer instructions.
  3. Sand flush with the wood surface using fine grit sandpaper.
  4. Apply 2–3 coats of Danish Oil, allowing drying time between coats.
  5. Buff the final coat for a rich satin finish.

Tip: Deep red epoxy works especially well for the logo and dragon-themed elements, creating a striking fantasy aesthetic.

Finished Product

A handcrafted Dungeons & Dragons wall clock made from authentic whisky barrel oak, featuring detailed laser engraving, custom dragon clock hands, optional coloured epoxy accents, and a durable Danish Oil finish—perfect for gaming rooms, home bars, and fantasy enthusiasts.
