Buddha imagery works on a laser because so much of it is symmetrical and layered. Mandala portraits build a face from concentric rings of cut pattern, so depth comes from stacking rather than from shading. Standing and seated silhouettes cut cleanly at any size and read instantly, which suits small altar pieces and shelf figures. Lotus motifs, bodhi leaves and mudra hand shapes fill out the rest. Warm plywood, bamboo and dark stained hardwood all suit the subject, and pieces are often paired with tealight holders for a meditation corner. Sizes run from 60 mm pendants to wall mandalas of 40 cm or more.

FAQs

How do layered mandala portraits work?

Each layer carries part of the image as cut pattern, and stacking three to seven of them builds the face and halo in relief. Alignment pins or a frame keep the layers registered. Because the effect depends on shadow between layers, spacers of 2 to 3 mm improve it noticeably.
